Crying Neymar bids emotional farewell to Santos ahead of Barcelona switch - Daily Mail

By Rik Sharma

PUBLISHED: 16:19 EST, 26 May 2013 | UPDATED: 16:45 EST, 26 May 2013

Neymar shed a few tears as he took the field for Santos for the last time ahead of his move to Barcelona.

The Brazil star will move to the Catalan giants in the summer on a five-year deal but was emotional as he bade goodbye during the 0-0 draw with Flamengo.

He released a statement on Saturday night on Instagram, which explained how he would never forget the fans of Santos and had the club in his heart.

Saying goodbye: Neymar was visibly upset before his final outing for Santos

VIDEO: Neymar shakes as he waits for the game to kick off

Neymar wrote: 'I want to thank the fans of Santos for these incredible nine years. My feeling for the club and the fans will never change. It is eternal!

'Only a club like Santos FC could give me everything I have experienced on and off the field. I thank the wonderful fans who supported me even in the most difficult moments.

'Titles, goals, dribbling, celebrations and songs that fans created for me will be forever in my heart...'

No way through: Neymar could not make the difference in the bore draw

Sunday night, against Flamengo, was the last chance he had to say goodbye to the fans.

'I made sure I could play the match tomorrow in Brasilia,' he said. 'I want to have the opportunity to once again take the field and hear the crowd scream my name ...

'It is a strange time for me, sad (farewell) and happy (new challenge). May God bless me in my choices ... And I'm always a Santos fan!'

In a statement, Santos said they had made every effort to keep hold of the player.

It read: 'The management committee of Santos FC announces that it has received notification from the athlete Neymar Jr advising that he has decided to accept the proposal of Barcelona. The transfer of playmaker to the Spanish team will be sealed in the coming days.

'After refusing a offers of many millions for Neymar Jr since mid-2010, and implemented a career plan that allowed his historic stay in Brazil for several years, bucking the trend of Brazilian football to quickly sell its greatest talents, Santos FC finally agreed to sell.

'Every effort was made to keep him in Brazil as long as possible, even offering to renew the current contract, which ended in July 2014. At this time, however, it was not possible to compete with the terms offered from abroad, which affected the decision of the player to review his professional life.

'Due to the confidentiality agreement, and by mutual agreement, the terms of the transfer will not be disclosed by any of the parties.

A Barcelona statement read: 'FC Barcelona and Santos have agreed to terms for Neymar da Silva Santos Junior. The Brazilian forward will don the Blaugrana strip for the next five seasons. The 21-year old is one of the most promising footballers on the planet.'

In demand: Real Madrid also wanted Neymar but Barcelona were his No 1 choice

Barcelona assistant boss Jordi Roura refused to be be drawn on the progress of Barcelona's chase on Friday, but acknowledged the talent of the player, who already has more than 30 international caps.

'Let things run their course,' he said. 'He's a spectacular player and any club would want him.'

Neymar is a superstar in Brazil, and his departure will be a big blow to fans of Santos, who had hoped he might stay until after next year's World Cup in the country.

With Neymar, who made his debut as a 17-year-old in 2009, Santos have enjoyed their greatest period of success since Pele was playing for the club, winning three straight Campeonato Paulista titles and the Copa do Brasil.

Home hero: Neymar (right) has spent his whole career at Santos and has won 32 caps for his country

The crowning glory came in 2011 when the club won the Copa Libertadores for the first time since 1963 and Neymar was named the South American Footballer of the Year as well as winning the Puskas Award for the world's best goal.

The statement from Santos concluded: 'More than an idol, Neymar Jr became a myth not only for Santos, but for Brazilians and football fans around the world.

'The club says goodbye for now to its playmaker, wishing you much success in your new journey, certain that the Vila Belmiro (stadium) will continue being your second home.'

Replacing Everett Golson: Who's next up for Notre Dame? - SB Nation

Everett Golson's departure leaves a massive hole in the Notre Dame offense. Who is going to fill it?

With Saturday's news that Notre Dame starting quarterback Everett Golson is leaving the school due to an academics issue, discussion quickly turned from "what's a residence life violation?" to "who is going to replace him?" The contenders are as follows:

Tommy Rees (#11, Senior, 6'2, 213)

Golson's departure leaves Rees as the presumptive starting quarterback. The senior was Notre Dame's starter in 2011, and has far more game experience than the other quarterbacks on the Irish roster. Rees, who was recruited to Notre Dame by Charlie Weis, has a career 63.6 percent completion percentage and has thrown 34 career touchdowns.

Of course, Rees entered 2012 as the presumptive starting quarterback, as well. An offseason run-in with the police earned him a one-game suspension. Golson started Notre Dame's opener against Navy in his absence and never relinquished the job. Rees made two starts in 2012, one when Golson was serving a one-series suspension and another when Golson was injured, but failed to retake the position. By the end of the year, he was listed as co-backup with Andrew Hendrix.

In other words, Rees is a default choice if nothing better emerges. This is Brian Kelly's team, though, and Kelly will be looking hard for something better if it's available.

Andrew Hendrix (#13, Senior, 6'2, 220)

Hendrix, another Charlie Weis recruit, looked like the odd man out of last season's quarterback derby. The former four-star recruit out of Cincinnati made just three appearances in 2012, completing five of seven pass attempts for 55 yards and adding another 41 yards on the ground. In 2011, Hendrix struggled in limited action, going 18/37 passing for 249 yards and tossing a pair of interceptions. He has been criticized for his footwork in the pocket, which is not exactly the problem you want to have as a senior quarterback.

Brian Kelly's offensive philosophy has continued to evolve at Notre Dame, from the pass-heavy spread of his early years with Dayne Crist to a more run-oriented, read option-heavy system with Golson. The latter iteration of Kelly's offense was much more effective, allowing Notre Dame to methodically move the ball down the field and put the game in the hands of Bob Diaco's defense.

The decision between Rees and Hendrix could hinge on which version of the Brian Kelly offense Brian Kelly wants to run. Tommy Rees can be a competent dropback passer, but is not a serious threat in the running game. Hendrix, on the other hand, has shown good instincts in the read option and elusiveness at the line of scrimmage. With the Irish returning many of the pieces of their phenomenal 2012 defense, Hendrix could potentially be the quarterback to provide a reasonable facsimile of the 2012 offense.

Malik Zaire (#8, Freshman, 6', 208)

Of course, Kelly could just throw out both seniors and start over with the crown jewel of his 2013 recruiting class. Zaire was one of the nation's top-rated quarterback prospects, a consensus four-star recruit with offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. He committed early to Notre Dame, enrolled in January, and participated in spring drills. His up-and-down cameo in Notre Dame's spring game included a long touchdown drive and a horrendous interception.

Expecting a true freshman -- even one with Zaire's natural ability -- to step in and lead a top-tier college offense is usually wishful thinking. Zaire clearly has much more to learn about playing quarterback at this level before he should be thrown into the fray. But if Rees continues to be Rees and Hendrix doesn't show marked improvement, Kelly could be left with little choice but to play his freshman, take the lumps as he learns the game on the fly, and rely on his defense to limit the damage.

Gunner Kiel (#1, Freshman (RS), 6'4, 210)

Which brings us to the biggest question of all: Would Gunner Kiel reconsider his transfer now that Golson is gone? Kiel was the nation's top-rated quarterback when he graduated from his Columbus, Ind. high school and entered Notre Dame. He redshirted as a freshman, and watched as the sophomore Golson took control of the Irish offense. Golson was good enough to push Kiel out the door; Gunner did not participate in Notre Dame's spring workouts and announced his transfer to Cincinnati in April.

The always-excellent John Infante has explained that Kiel could probably return to Notre Dame next season if he desired, under a rarely-utilized loophole in the transfer rule that allows a player to return to his original school if he has not yet participated in "countable" athletic activities (Kiel is reportedly participating in voluntary summer workouts with the Bearcats, but those are not "countable"). While Kiel may have to pay his own way for a year, he would be eligible to play for Notre Dame when the Fighting Irish kick off against Temple on Aug. 31.

The relevant question, then, is whether Kiel would return. Yes, Golson's dismissal opens the door for Kiel to win the starting quarterback job, but Kiel's chances of actually taking the starting spot were likely reduced by his non-participation in spring practice. The highly-publicized transfer did not exactly sit well with the fiery Brian Kelly, and Kiel's post-transfer comments about offensive coordinator Chuck Martin certainly could not have helped.

There is no indication yet that Kiel is considering a move back to South Bend -- he texted "I'm a Bearcat" to the Cincinnati Enquirer Sunday morning -- and no indication of whether Notre Dame would have him back if he tried. But with the vacancy at quarterback and Kiel's track record for holding commitments, no amount of text messages will stop the speculation. Kiel will be in play until fall camp opens in August.

Good feature - cozy and WARM! Exact layering item for crazy new england ride out. Wicks the dampness from your base layer keeping you dry and toasty.

Design is nice but had to restore this jersey since, even even if it is made of a wool-blend, it felt like a 1950's era ski jersey. There are wool-blends out there that don't scrape like a bag full of cats. I will say, the sell took the restore back but wouldn't pay for restore shipping since, in their attitude, it was not defective.

Concert Review: Tim McGraw opens DTE season on a winning note - Oakland Press

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP -- All the ingredients for a big night at the DTE Energy Music Theatre -- good weather, a spirited and sold-out crowd, plenty of hits from the stage -- were present and accounted for as the DTE Energy Music Theatre opened its 2013 season on Sunday night, May 19.

The hits, of course, came courtesy of Tim McGraw, usurping Eddie Money's usual venue-opening role with two hours of typically high-energy country and rock, celebrating his latest release, "Two Lanes of Freedom," but hardly at the expense of the rest of his multi-platinum, 20-year catalog. Following spirited opening sets by Brantley Gilbert and Love & Theft, McGraw -- squeezed into extremely tight blue jeans and black mesh T-shirt -- opened Sunday's show by walking through the DTE concourse and down a pavilion aisle, high-fiving fans in the seats and in the general admission pit in front of the stage before opening with a barrage of hits that included "When the Green Grass Grows," "All I Want is a Life," "Down on the Farm," a muscular "How Bad Do You Want It" and the gentler "Everywhere."

It wasn't until the sixth song -- "Southern Girl" -- that McGraw tapped into the new material, though he also visited the album with a five-song mid-show blast that mixed rowdy tracks ("Mexicoma," McGraw's lift of Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta," and the title track) with moodier, melodic fare such as "Nashville Without You," "Friend of a Friend" and "Highway Don't Care." Meanwhile, McGraw and his latest band, dubbed Uncle Dick's Horse, added new, industrial and electronic-flavored introductions to old favorites such as "The Cowboy in Me," "Feels Good on My Lips" and "I Like It, I Love It" -- a nice, if superfluous bit of synthesis that showed he's at least paying attention to contemporary trends.

But none of that was better than the actual playing, which reached its zenith during the long, guitar-heavy jam that finished off "Angel Boy" and a noisy nadir on metallic encore renders of "Indian Outlaw" and "Truck Yeah."

While his taped image appeared on TV with his CBS special "Tim McGraw's Superstar Summer Night," the singer also upped the eye-candy ante in the flesh, using an array of video screens to create massive, stage-enveloping 3D visuals to accent the performance. It also allowed him to virtually recreate guest appearances by Taylor Swift and Keith Urban on "Highway Don't Care" and by Pitbull on "Feels Good on My Lips," showing big stars really do have the clout to be in two places at once.

It was indeed a big night all the way around, for McGraw and for DTE, which unveiled its new public bar, The Arbor, as well as other changes, including some new rest rooms, on its opening night. It may have been mid-May, but on this particular night it felt like the heart of the summer at the area's biggest amphitheater.

Denmark takes out Eurovision 2013

Denmark has won this year's Eurovision Song Contest with the song Only Teardrops by Emmelie de Forest.

It is surely a great testament to the success of Australia's international broadcaster that Eurovision has acquired such a dedicated local following.

Were it not for SBS's dedicated coverage, celebrating the 30-year anniversary of televising the event, it's likely the Australian following would not extend much further locally than handful of diehard European Australians in suburban backyards.

Yet every year parties take place in homes, bars and social clubs all over Australia from St Kilda to Bondi Beach and beyond to celebrate an event to which Australia has never been an active participant ' just an excited and bemused antipodean onlooker.

Aussies love a good contest - and Eurovision provides the perfect opportunity to poke affectionate fun at our European relatives across the pond. But somewhere along the way, Australia fell in love with Eurovision, and now there seems to be no turning back on it.

With Australia's deep immigrant connections to Europe, it's not altogether surprising that we like to feel part of Eurovision. It's there in our national DNA as much as good coffee ' another European import. Of course we fell in love with Abba before Eurovision was screened here ' Waterloo trailed a path for Aussies to follow. And who could forget that our very own Olivia Newton-John represented England at the finals in 1974.

The connections run deep. Not only does the SBS coverage take us on a campy, kitschy trip to the heart of Eurovision, it takes it a step further and guides of through parts of Europe many Australians may have never otherwise have experienced ' and always offers a distinctly Aussie slant on them.

It's like a Euro travel brochure hosted by all manner of singing misfits, punctuated by rare moments of brilliance in which we have to disguise our embarrassed tears at momentarily getting swept away by it all. The camp romantic in us all is awoken from its slumber.

This year as a prelude to the main event we were taken on a campervan tour through the Baltic states with SBS host Julia Zemiro keeping the Eurovision dream alive for all of us back home.

She offered affectionate and often hilarious interviews with an Abba covers band in Sweden, heavy metal Vikings from Finland, and, in a nod to Eurovision's strong gay following, even took us into the bedroom drag performers from Ukraine.

Along the way we learnt about Estonia's singing revolution and visited the house where Abba had formed in the Swedish island of Djurgarden before Zemiro got to meet her childhood idol, Abba vocalist Frida. Pure gold! For diehard fans, SBS also offers Eurovision Radio ' a 24-hour stream of songs from previous contests allowing punters the opportunity of total immersion.

We love to disparage the bad taste tunes like this year's Irish entrant Ryan Dolan who, despite putting on a good performance with beefy dancers who that somewhat stole the show from his rather vapid tune, still managed to get the wooden spoon.

No doubt the arrival of social media has added a whole new dimension to Eurovision, and SBS provided local viewers plenty of opportunities to comment. In response to Estonian entrant Birgit, pregnant and all dressed in flowing white, Australian tweeter @amam1975 jibed: 'The hotel called. They'd like their shower curtain back, Estonia.'

As expected, it was Denmark who brought home victory this year, with the barefoot feral-chic up-and-coming singer Emmelie de Forest winning over voters with her song Only Teardrops. My personal favourite was the Dutch witchy singer Anouk and her tune Birds. The Netherlands never does well at Eurovision ' despite trying so hard.

But isn't that the thing with Eurovision ' no matter where you're watching it in the world ' you never expect your own favourite to win. And that's part of the fun.

Eurovision is the contest the world loves to hate. And Australians are not immune. There is something tantalisingly egalitarian about Eurovision that ignores the usual geopolitical hierarchies of Europe.

This year was no exception with the UK finishing 19th despite recruiting a 61-year old Bonnie Tyler to front the stage. Boy George summed it up when he tweeted in response: "Eurovision is so mental! Most of the songs are incoherent and devoid of a tune.' Ain't that just the truth.

Hurt teases Doctor Who fans in series finale - Sydney Morning Herald

Spoiler alert

John Hurt as Control in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Veteran star John Hurt has been unveiled as an incarnation of The Doctor as the latest series of Doctor Who reached its climax last night.

Viewers in the UK saw the actor - famed for his roles in movies such as Alien and the TV drama The Naked Civil Servant - make his debut at the conclusion of the BBC1 show on Saturday night. While the episode screened on ABC1 at 7.30pm last night.

In a convoluted plot, viewers saw the Doctor's sidekick Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) enter his "timeline" where she saw his other guises, or regenerations, as they headed through various points in history.

But as she spotted one figure she did not recognise (Hurt), the present Doctor, played by Matt Smith, ushered her away.

And as 73-year-old Hurt turned round, the words "introducing John Hurt as The Doctor" flashed on-screen. But it is not entirely clear if Hurt is expected to become part of the weekly series.

Hurt had already let the cat out of the bag earlier that he played a pivotal role, when speaking at an event he said he played "part of The Doctor" in a "kind of trinity" with other actors. He is also expected to appear in a 50th anniversary special later this year, with viewers told that the plot was "to be continued".
