E3 2013: Day One Wrap Up - IGN

Day one of E3 2013 has finished, and quite a few announcements were made. Here's all the biggest announcements in one handy location.

Microsoft

Xbox One is coming to shops this November, and will cost the princely sum of $499/429/'499. Xbox One preorders are now available.

E3 is about all about games. And encouragingly, it turned out that Microsoft actually had some. In fact, it has loads of them. It had exclusive bombastic shooters like Titanfall and Ryse: Son of Rome:

...quiet indie games and sprawling open-world RPGs:

...some familiar faces, like MGS V and Killer Instinct:

...games for kids, like Project Spark and Minecraft Xbox One Edition:

...obligatory zombies and racing games:

And games that will also be TV shows:

And there was nary a mention of American Football, Skype, or Windows 8 to be found.

Microsoft's new partnership with EA was strengthened with the announcement that Battlefield 4 DLC will be coming to Xbox One first, and some stunning new footage of the game was shown off:

Oh yeah, there's also a new Halo:

Sony

Sony started its press conference by revealing the design of the PlayStation 4 (it's a lovely homage to the PS2 from the future) and ended by revealing the attractive, and very competitive, price of its new console.

PlayStation 4 is coming to shops this Holiday season, and will cost the princely sum of $399, 349, 399 Euros.ThePS4 is now available for preorderas well.

Probably the biggest win for Sony today was the announcement that PlayStation 4 willsupportused games. If you bought the game, you own the game ' that was the clear message out today's conference.

Also, a single PlayStation Plus memberships would cover PS3, Vita, and PS4. It is worth noting, though, that to play multiplayer games online on Sony's next console you will have to subscribe to PlayStation Plus.

Sony also promising that coming sometime in 2014 would be an extensive catalogue of PS3 games that would be accessible in the cloud. The service promises "amazing gameplay" that is "fast and responsive".

We saw the first gameplay footage for Destiny, and Sony announced that PS4 would receive exclusive content for Bungie's new game:

And there was even room for some new games, too.Sony Santa Monica showed off The Order 1886, and there was an impressive showcase of cool Indie games:

EA

EA used its conference to focus exclusively on the next-generation of consoles, showing 11 titles for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Unexpectedly, there was a new family-friendly, third-person shooter in the form of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare ' a charming parody of recent shooters featuring all the familiar flora from the original game and some new ones too. It's even using the cutting-edge Frostbite 3 engine used by Battlefield 4.

EA recently acquired the Star Wars license, and since that announcement was made rumours have clogged the internet ' which studio is working on what?

EA used the stage to confirm just one Star Wars, but it's pretty much the one that everyone wanted: Battlefront made by DICE using Frostbite 3. Check out the announcement trailer below 'it looks like we're heading back to Hoth.

There was of course a closer look at its new suite of sports titles, with added focus on FIFA 14 and the publisher's new UFC title:

Commander mode also returns to Battlefield 4, allowing even the most casual of tablet players to get involve with huge online multiplayer matches. Check out how it actually works in the demo below with IGN commentary:

And EA ended its conference with some great fan service, giving the people what they've demanded for years: Mirror's Edge 2.

Ubisoft

Ubisoft's conference was a tad quieter this year, though it did start with a guitar solo to launch Rocksmith 2014, which will let you jam using a range of instruments:

With regards to next-gen, Ubisoft showed off Assassin's Creed IV and Watch dogs, two titles that will straddle console generations current and future. But Ubisoft also had some next-gen titles to reveal, too, starting with the obligatory racing game. The Crew is an ambitious open-world racing game, taking you to the streets of New York City to South Beach. It looks a bit like Burnout crossed with an MMO.

The signs of a transmedia revolution (games and TV shows dovetailing on a weekly basis) was also continued by Ubisoft who announced Rabbids Invasion, an exclusive kids title for Xbox One that will also be an animated show for Nickelodeon.

One of the most successful Xbox Live titles also went next-gen with the announcement of Trials Fusion. It will also be coming to mobile in the shape of Trials Frontier.

And remembering how well it's 'One More Thing' reveal of Watchdogs worked at last year's conference, Ubisoft debuted a new Tom Clancy title called The Division. It's an expansive online RPG. Watch gameplay footage with IGN commentary below:

NSA seeks criminal probe of program leaker - CBS News

After a pair of mass online and phone surveillance programs were revealed in two stunning reports, the National Security Agency has decided to go after whoever revealed them.

Understanding what the NSA leaks mean

Play Video

Journalist: No valid claim NSA leaks will harm national security

Play Video

NSA data-gathering: Overkill or necessary tool?

A Director of National Intelligence official confirmed to CBS News correspondent Major Garrett that the highly secretive NSA has asked the Justice Department to investigate the leak. Reuters described the formal request as a "crimes report."

The Obama administration has shown a pattern of aggressively going after leakers of highly sensitive information that it does not itself leak, even going so far as to investigate the journalists reporting on them.

The first of the two leaks were reported in the Washington Post and Britain's Guardian newspaper. They claimed to have information on a program collecting the telephone records of millions of U.S. customers of Verizon under a top secret court order.

The order was granted by the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court on April 25 and was good until July 19, the Guardian said. The order requires Verizon, one of the nation's largest telecommunications companies, on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the U.S. and between the U.S. and other countries.

The second leak involved a top-secret arm of the controversial Stellar Wind program set up in the wake of 9/11 is allowing the National Security Agency and the FBI to tap directly into the central servers of nine major Internet companies to extract audio, video, photos, emails and documents that let analysts track an individual's communication.

The program, called PRISM, was established in 2007, according to The Washington Post, which broke the story Thursday evening. It culls metadata from Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube and Apple and will soon include Dropbox.

Apple denied any involvement with the program. Google and Facebook also denied providing direct access to their servers and said they disclose user data only after careful scrutiny and in accordance with the law.

The nation's top intelligence official pushed back Saturday against the "myths" surrounding the disclosure of two classified government surveillance programs, saying the government cannot gather data on Americans' phone use and foreigners' Internet use without the permission of a specialized court, and that all three branches of government rigorously oversee the programs in question.

The two explosive stories this week were "reckless disclosures of intelligence community measures used to keep Americans safe," Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said in a statement.

"Our ability to discuss these activities is limited by our need to protect intelligence sources and methods," Clapper said. "However, there are significant misimpressions that have resulted from the recent articles."

The DNI released a fact sheet (PDF) that he hoped would "dispel some of the myths and add necessary context to what has been published."

'America's Got Talent': Mel B Previews the Good (and Bad) Auditions, New ... - Hollywood Reporter

NBC

From left: judges Howie Mandel, Mel B, Howard Stern and Heidi Klum with host Nick Cannon

America's Got Talent viewers will get their first real look at the two new -- but familiar -- faces on the judging panel when the NBC talent competition returns Tuesday night.

Mel B and Heidi Klum join returning judges Howie Mandel and Howard Stern on season eight of the reality show, which also will relocate from Newark's New Jersey Performing Arts Center to New York's Radio City Music Hall when the live episodes begin July 23.

PHOTOS: THR's Reality Heat List

Ahead of Tuesday's premiere, Spice Girl Mel B, who also has served as a judge on the Australian and U.K. versions of singing competition The X Factor, talked to The Hollywood Reporter about what viewers can expect, how the judges are meshing and who are some of the most memorable talent -- both good and bad -- so far.

The Hollywood Reporter: How did you become involved with America's Got Talent?

Mel B: I got the phone call and got offered the job and was like, "Yeah!" I love this show, and of course the fact that it's now in New York at Radio City Music Hall -- that's a legendary place that makes the show even more exciting. It's a great family show, and people love watching it. I've watched for many years; I sit down with my kids and watch it. It's nice to be a part of it.

THR: How has your experience as a judge been so far?

Mel B: I was actually a judge on The X Factor in the U.K. and Australia, but this is different because I have no idea what to expect next. Someone comes on the stage and all of a sudden there's a snake around their neck or they're putting a sword down their throat. Then there's also singing and dancing. It's truly a proper variety show, and anything can happen. It's like experiencing a roller-coaster ride, everyone is so different, but thoroughly enjoyable.

THR: What can you tell us about the auditions?

Mel B: They're all over now. We've been going up and down America from San Antonio to New Orleans, from Los Angeles to New York -- literally everywhere. We've seen so many interesting acts -- good ones and bad ones. There was one guy and his girlfriend piercing each other wire, through his nose and then through his wife's nose, and then his cheek and his wife's, backward and forward, zigzagging their bodies with this piece of wire. I found it repulsive. They were bleeding, literally. Then someone went up an 80-foot-pole with no safety net and did a handstand. There were normal acts too -- cloggers, dancers. It's been an interesting journey so far. The talent definitely upped the ante over last year. Now they are combining things, riding a unicycle while jugging and balancing a dog on their face. One guy shoved 27 swords down his throat and brought out an X-ray machine to show the swords going down in his stomach. Howard and Howie loved it; Heidi and I were like, "No."

STORY: 'America's Got Talent' Judges Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel Dish on Season 8

THR: What's the chemistry like among the four judges?

Mel B: I've known Heidi for quite some time, and we get along like a house on fire. We give off a girl-power vibe. Howard and Howie are absolutely hilarious. We all come from entirely different backgrounds, but we all have something valid to say because of our experiences in life.

THR: How would you describe your style of judging?

Mel B: I don't think I have a style of judging. I'm just very, very honest. That's it. When you watch the show, you can judge my judging for yourself, but I'm just honest. At the end of the day, whether it's a magic act or a dancing act or a singing act, if I want to buy tickets to come see your show, I'm going to like it. As long as you're professional and entertaining, I appreciate that.

THR: Do you think the Radio City Music Hall setting will bring a new energy to the show?

Mel B: I think it will make everybody feel a little more nervous because legends perform on this stage. It's one of the stamp marks of America.

America's Got Talent returns with a two-hour premiere at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Watch a preview below.

Box office report: 'After Earth' crashes, marks Will Smith's worst summer ... - Entertainment Weekly (blog)

Ever since Independence Day's $50.2 million debut on July 4th weekend in 1996, Will Smith has been the undisputed king of the summer box office. He's led films like Men In Black; Bad Boys II; I, Robot; and Hancock to massive grosses ' both domestically and around the world.

But his latest effort, After Earth, landed with a major thud on opening weekend, grossing just $27 million (distributor Sony told outlets it was expecting $35 million before the weekend) and opening in third place with a tepid 'B' CinemaScore. The $130 million M. Night Shyamalan-directed sci-fi film, based on an original story idea by Will Smith himself, also starred the A-lister's son, Jaden. The father/son duo previously found success with 2006's The Pursuit of Happyness, which earned $163.6 million, but this time around, the casting gimmick wasn't enough to get audiences into the door.

After Earth's opening weekend was Smith's lowest summer debut since his first wide release, Made In America, which bowed with $11.8 million in 1993. Discouragingly, After Earth opened with even less than Smith's oft-ridiculed Wild Wild West, which wrangled $27.8 million in its opening weekend in 1999.

So what went wrong? Well, M. Night Shyamalan's name certainly repelled many potential viewers. The director has lost credibility with audiences after films like Lady In The Water, The Happening, and The Last Airbender, and Sony wisely kept his name out of all marketing materials. Still, film buffs (and anyone that read the scathing reviews) weren't fooled. The blame can't lie solely with the director, though, especially at a time when people seem to feel little affection for the Smith family. Between accusations of Hollywood nepotism, backlash against eyebrow-raising interviews, and lingering suspicions about their involvement with Scientology, Will, Jaden, and the rest of the gang seem to be in a bit of a public opinion rut.

Whatever the reason for After Earth's domestic under-performance, Sony is hoping that international grosses can make up lost ground. And that certainly could happen since Will Smith's film's often gross more overseas than they do in America. Last year, Men In Black 3 took in $179 million domestically and $445 million internationally, and time will tell whether After Earth enjoys a similar fate.

But there were other movies at the box office this weekend, too. Let's talk about those!

Fast & Furious 6 topped the chart for a second time, dropping by a hefty 65 percent to $34.5 million. While that's the largest-ever second weekend drop for a Fast film, the well-reviewed sequel has already earned $170.4 million in just ten days, making it the second-highest grossing entry in the franchise behind Fast Five's $209 million haul. Worldwide, Fast & Furious 6 (or is it just Furious 6?) has earned $480.1 million, and it should race past the $600 million mark with ease. Universal spent about $160 million on the film. (Fun fact: between Fast & Furious 6, Pain & Gain, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and Snitch, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has had a film in the Top 10 every weekend since February 22.)

The surprise of the weekend was Summit's magician thriller Now You See Me, which worked box office magic on its opening weekend and earned $28.1 million from 2,925 theaters ' good for second place. Expectations for the $80 million thriller, which stars Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher, and Mark Ruffalo, were in the $20 million-range, but business proved bouyant. Audiences, which were 51 percent female and 52 percent under 30, issued the film an enthusiastic 'A-' CinemaScore grade, which should help the action entry thrive in coming weeks.

Two holdovers rounded out the Top 5. Star Trek Into Darkness dropped by a distressing 56 percent to $16.4 million in its third weekend, lifting its total to $181.2 million. The $190 million sequel is now officially lagging behind 2009's Star Trek, which had earned $184.5 million at the same point in its run. Most sequels of well-received blockbusters get a big boost in business, but Darkness hasn't been so lucky. In fifth, Fox's animated film Epic fell 51 percent to about $16.4 million, giving it $65.2 million total against a $100 million budget. It looks like this won't be another Croods-like performer for the studio.

1. Fast & Furious 6 ' $34.5 million2. Now You See Me ' $28.1 million3. After Earth ' $27 million4. Star Trek Into Darkness ' $16.4 million5. Epic ' $16.4 million

Just outside the Top 5 was The Hangover Part III, which fell 62 percent to $15.9 million in its second weekend giving it a weak $88.1 million total. It's truly astonishing how poorly Part III is playing when compared to The Hangover Part II, which had earned $185.8 million at the same point in its run. Yes, after 11 days Part III is trailing its predecessor by $97.7 million domestically. The $103 million Warner Bros. film is unlikely to even reach the $135 million mark that Part II earned in just five days. Fortunately, the film just had a stellar $82.3 million opening weekend overseas.

Check back next week for full box office coverage of The Internship and The Purge, and follow me on Twitter for more up-to-the-minute box office updates.

Smith family is lost in 'After Earth' - Boston Globe

'After Earth' is Will Smith's version of Take Your Son to Work Day. Actually, he lets the kid take over the whole office. Some Hollywood kids get Porsches. Jaden Smith gets an apocalyptic summer blockbuster to horse around in. He was 13 when the film was shot. Somewhere off-camera, a rabbi must have been saying, 'Today you are a star, my son.'

Sorry, not quite. 'After Earth' takes place millennia in the future, when mankind has long since fled our ruined home planet and resettled on a distant orb called Nova Prime. Except for the carnivorous alien squiddly-diddlies called Ursas ' they're blind but can smell your fear ' the place is paradise.

Smith Sr. plays the bodaciously named Cypher Raige, leader of the warrior class known as Rangers and the coolest honcho on Nova Prime. He's so cool he has mastered the art of living without fear, which renders him invisible to the Ursas. No such luck for his son Kitai (Smith Jr.), a gangly Ranger cadet who's loaded down with guilt over the death of his sister (played in flashback by Zoe Isabella Kravitz, daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet ' you can't be in this movie without celebrity DNA).

Father and son ship out on a bonding mission but crash land on an Earth that has returned to its pre-human wilderness state. Dad's legs are broken, immobilizing the older Smith in the cockpit for the duration, and it's up to Kitai to cross 100 kilometers of dangerous territory to find the rescue beacon in the spaceship's tail section. Oh, and the slavering Ursa they had caged up in the hold is out and about.

It's very sweet that Will Smith, who wrote the original story and served as co-producer (along with wife Jada Pinkett Smith), has given his son a movie of his own to prove his worth. And 'After Earth' is a passably entertaining visionquest of an adventure, one best suited to 10-year-old boys who'll goggle in awe at the baboons and giant eagles while hoping Kitai conquers his terror and brings it home for Dad.

For grown-ups, it's more of a trudge. The movie is being billed as a two-for-one Smith special, but Will Smith is not only stuck in a chair for much of the running time, he plays Cypher as a military man repressed to the point of constipation. It's a humorless, charisma-free performance ' not exactly what we've come to expect from this actor.

Perhaps he's dialing it down so that his son might shine the brighter. To carry a movie, though ' which is what 'After Earth' asks of Jaden Smith ' you need acting chops and basic screen presence, and I really regret to report that the kid has neither. He held his own as the young son in 'The Pursuit of Happyness' (2006) and as the lead in the 2010 remake of 'The Karate Kid,' but adolescence seems to have knocked the knack out of Smith, and his performance here is tense and amateurish. We're supposed to root for Kitaj, not tire of his whining.

Around here I should note that the movie was co-written and flaccidly directed by M. Night Shyamalan, a fact that the marketing campaign for 'After Earth' would prefer that you ignore. 'After Earth' is a step up from 2010's hapless 'The Last Airbender' and proves that Shyamalan hasn't completely forgotten how to make a movie, but his 1999 breakthrough, 'The Sixth Sense,' is looking more and more like an aberration. If he can forget anyone ever considered him a visionary and be content with being a journeyman director, he may have a career yet.

Still, is it Shyamalan who almost cruelly hangs Jaden Smith out to dry in 'After Earth'? Or is it the pressure of working for the Old Man? We like to choose our movie stars democratically rather than having them foisted on us like royal heirs, and I can't imagine moviegoers are going to fall for the younger Smith just because his father says we should. Maybe it's time for the boy to leave home and find a weird little indie movie of his own.

Crying Neymar bids emotional farewell to Santos ahead of Barcelona switch - Daily Mail

By Rik Sharma

PUBLISHED: 16:19 EST, 26 May 2013 | UPDATED: 16:45 EST, 26 May 2013

Neymar shed a few tears as he took the field for Santos for the last time ahead of his move to Barcelona.

The Brazil star will move to the Catalan giants in the summer on a five-year deal but was emotional as he bade goodbye during the 0-0 draw with Flamengo.

He released a statement on Saturday night on Instagram, which explained how he would never forget the fans of Santos and had the club in his heart.

Saying goodbye: Neymar was visibly upset before his final outing for Santos

VIDEO: Neymar shakes as he waits for the game to kick off

Neymar wrote: 'I want to thank the fans of Santos for these incredible nine years. My feeling for the club and the fans will never change. It is eternal!

'Only a club like Santos FC could give me everything I have experienced on and off the field. I thank the wonderful fans who supported me even in the most difficult moments.

'Titles, goals, dribbling, celebrations and songs that fans created for me will be forever in my heart...'

No way through: Neymar could not make the difference in the bore draw

Sunday night, against Flamengo, was the last chance he had to say goodbye to the fans.

'I made sure I could play the match tomorrow in Brasilia,' he said. 'I want to have the opportunity to once again take the field and hear the crowd scream my name ...

'It is a strange time for me, sad (farewell) and happy (new challenge). May God bless me in my choices ... And I'm always a Santos fan!'

In a statement, Santos said they had made every effort to keep hold of the player.

It read: 'The management committee of Santos FC announces that it has received notification from the athlete Neymar Jr advising that he has decided to accept the proposal of Barcelona. The transfer of playmaker to the Spanish team will be sealed in the coming days.

'After refusing a offers of many millions for Neymar Jr since mid-2010, and implemented a career plan that allowed his historic stay in Brazil for several years, bucking the trend of Brazilian football to quickly sell its greatest talents, Santos FC finally agreed to sell.

'Every effort was made to keep him in Brazil as long as possible, even offering to renew the current contract, which ended in July 2014. At this time, however, it was not possible to compete with the terms offered from abroad, which affected the decision of the player to review his professional life.

'Due to the confidentiality agreement, and by mutual agreement, the terms of the transfer will not be disclosed by any of the parties.

A Barcelona statement read: 'FC Barcelona and Santos have agreed to terms for Neymar da Silva Santos Junior. The Brazilian forward will don the Blaugrana strip for the next five seasons. The 21-year old is one of the most promising footballers on the planet.'

In demand: Real Madrid also wanted Neymar but Barcelona were his No 1 choice

Barcelona assistant boss Jordi Roura refused to be be drawn on the progress of Barcelona's chase on Friday, but acknowledged the talent of the player, who already has more than 30 international caps.

'Let things run their course,' he said. 'He's a spectacular player and any club would want him.'

Neymar is a superstar in Brazil, and his departure will be a big blow to fans of Santos, who had hoped he might stay until after next year's World Cup in the country.

With Neymar, who made his debut as a 17-year-old in 2009, Santos have enjoyed their greatest period of success since Pele was playing for the club, winning three straight Campeonato Paulista titles and the Copa do Brasil.

Home hero: Neymar (right) has spent his whole career at Santos and has won 32 caps for his country

The crowning glory came in 2011 when the club won the Copa Libertadores for the first time since 1963 and Neymar was named the South American Footballer of the Year as well as winning the Puskas Award for the world's best goal.

The statement from Santos concluded: 'More than an idol, Neymar Jr became a myth not only for Santos, but for Brazilians and football fans around the world.

'The club says goodbye for now to its playmaker, wishing you much success in your new journey, certain that the Vila Belmiro (stadium) will continue being your second home.'

Replacing Everett Golson: Who's next up for Notre Dame? - SB Nation

Everett Golson's departure leaves a massive hole in the Notre Dame offense. Who is going to fill it?

With Saturday's news that Notre Dame starting quarterback Everett Golson is leaving the school due to an academics issue, discussion quickly turned from "what's a residence life violation?" to "who is going to replace him?" The contenders are as follows:

Tommy Rees (#11, Senior, 6'2, 213)

Golson's departure leaves Rees as the presumptive starting quarterback. The senior was Notre Dame's starter in 2011, and has far more game experience than the other quarterbacks on the Irish roster. Rees, who was recruited to Notre Dame by Charlie Weis, has a career 63.6 percent completion percentage and has thrown 34 career touchdowns.

Of course, Rees entered 2012 as the presumptive starting quarterback, as well. An offseason run-in with the police earned him a one-game suspension. Golson started Notre Dame's opener against Navy in his absence and never relinquished the job. Rees made two starts in 2012, one when Golson was serving a one-series suspension and another when Golson was injured, but failed to retake the position. By the end of the year, he was listed as co-backup with Andrew Hendrix.

In other words, Rees is a default choice if nothing better emerges. This is Brian Kelly's team, though, and Kelly will be looking hard for something better if it's available.

Andrew Hendrix (#13, Senior, 6'2, 220)

Hendrix, another Charlie Weis recruit, looked like the odd man out of last season's quarterback derby. The former four-star recruit out of Cincinnati made just three appearances in 2012, completing five of seven pass attempts for 55 yards and adding another 41 yards on the ground. In 2011, Hendrix struggled in limited action, going 18/37 passing for 249 yards and tossing a pair of interceptions. He has been criticized for his footwork in the pocket, which is not exactly the problem you want to have as a senior quarterback.

Brian Kelly's offensive philosophy has continued to evolve at Notre Dame, from the pass-heavy spread of his early years with Dayne Crist to a more run-oriented, read option-heavy system with Golson. The latter iteration of Kelly's offense was much more effective, allowing Notre Dame to methodically move the ball down the field and put the game in the hands of Bob Diaco's defense.

The decision between Rees and Hendrix could hinge on which version of the Brian Kelly offense Brian Kelly wants to run. Tommy Rees can be a competent dropback passer, but is not a serious threat in the running game. Hendrix, on the other hand, has shown good instincts in the read option and elusiveness at the line of scrimmage. With the Irish returning many of the pieces of their phenomenal 2012 defense, Hendrix could potentially be the quarterback to provide a reasonable facsimile of the 2012 offense.

Malik Zaire (#8, Freshman, 6', 208)

Of course, Kelly could just throw out both seniors and start over with the crown jewel of his 2013 recruiting class. Zaire was one of the nation's top-rated quarterback prospects, a consensus four-star recruit with offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. He committed early to Notre Dame, enrolled in January, and participated in spring drills. His up-and-down cameo in Notre Dame's spring game included a long touchdown drive and a horrendous interception.

Expecting a true freshman -- even one with Zaire's natural ability -- to step in and lead a top-tier college offense is usually wishful thinking. Zaire clearly has much more to learn about playing quarterback at this level before he should be thrown into the fray. But if Rees continues to be Rees and Hendrix doesn't show marked improvement, Kelly could be left with little choice but to play his freshman, take the lumps as he learns the game on the fly, and rely on his defense to limit the damage.

Gunner Kiel (#1, Freshman (RS), 6'4, 210)

Which brings us to the biggest question of all: Would Gunner Kiel reconsider his transfer now that Golson is gone? Kiel was the nation's top-rated quarterback when he graduated from his Columbus, Ind. high school and entered Notre Dame. He redshirted as a freshman, and watched as the sophomore Golson took control of the Irish offense. Golson was good enough to push Kiel out the door; Gunner did not participate in Notre Dame's spring workouts and announced his transfer to Cincinnati in April.

The always-excellent John Infante has explained that Kiel could probably return to Notre Dame next season if he desired, under a rarely-utilized loophole in the transfer rule that allows a player to return to his original school if he has not yet participated in "countable" athletic activities (Kiel is reportedly participating in voluntary summer workouts with the Bearcats, but those are not "countable"). While Kiel may have to pay his own way for a year, he would be eligible to play for Notre Dame when the Fighting Irish kick off against Temple on Aug. 31.

The relevant question, then, is whether Kiel would return. Yes, Golson's dismissal opens the door for Kiel to win the starting quarterback job, but Kiel's chances of actually taking the starting spot were likely reduced by his non-participation in spring practice. The highly-publicized transfer did not exactly sit well with the fiery Brian Kelly, and Kiel's post-transfer comments about offensive coordinator Chuck Martin certainly could not have helped.

There is no indication yet that Kiel is considering a move back to South Bend -- he texted "I'm a Bearcat" to the Cincinnati Enquirer Sunday morning -- and no indication of whether Notre Dame would have him back if he tried. But with the vacancy at quarterback and Kiel's track record for holding commitments, no amount of text messages will stop the speculation. Kiel will be in play until fall camp opens in August.

'The agent encountered the suspect while conducting official duties,' the statement said. 'The suspect is deceased. We do not have any further details at this time.'

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, the F.B.I. has sought to speak with people who knew Mr. Tsarnaev and his brother, Dzhokhar, in an attempt to learn how they were radicalized.

Merrell Women's Dreya Midlayer Wool-Blend Fleece Sweater (Cinder Heather, Small) Shopper Reviews

Merrell Women's Dreya Midlayer Wool-Blend Fleece Sweater (Cinder Heather, Small) Shopper Reviews
Good feature - cozy and WARM! Exact layering item for crazy new england ride out. Wicks the dampness from your base layer keeping you dry and toasty.
- Looking for the Best

Design is nice but had to restore this jersey since, even even if it is made of a wool-blend, it felt like a 1950's era ski jersey. There are wool-blends out there that don't scrape like a bag full of cats. I will say, the sell took the restore back but wouldn't pay for restore shipping since, in their attitude, it was not defective.
- Jon M. Smiley "JMS"

Concert Review: Tim McGraw opens DTE season on a winning note - Oakland Press

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP -- All the ingredients for a big night at the DTE Energy Music Theatre -- good weather, a spirited and sold-out crowd, plenty of hits from the stage -- were present and accounted for as the DTE Energy Music Theatre opened its 2013 season on Sunday night, May 19.

The hits, of course, came courtesy of Tim McGraw, usurping Eddie Money's usual venue-opening role with two hours of typically high-energy country and rock, celebrating his latest release, "Two Lanes of Freedom," but hardly at the expense of the rest of his multi-platinum, 20-year catalog. Following spirited opening sets by Brantley Gilbert and Love & Theft, McGraw -- squeezed into extremely tight blue jeans and black mesh T-shirt -- opened Sunday's show by walking through the DTE concourse and down a pavilion aisle, high-fiving fans in the seats and in the general admission pit in front of the stage before opening with a barrage of hits that included "When the Green Grass Grows," "All I Want is a Life," "Down on the Farm," a muscular "How Bad Do You Want It" and the gentler "Everywhere."

It wasn't until the sixth song -- "Southern Girl" -- that McGraw tapped into the new material, though he also visited the album with a five-song mid-show blast that mixed rowdy tracks ("Mexicoma," McGraw's lift of Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta," and the title track) with moodier, melodic fare such as "Nashville Without You," "Friend of a Friend" and "Highway Don't Care." Meanwhile, McGraw and his latest band, dubbed Uncle Dick's Horse, added new, industrial and electronic-flavored introductions to old favorites such as "The Cowboy in Me," "Feels Good on My Lips" and "I Like It, I Love It" -- a nice, if superfluous bit of synthesis that showed he's at least paying attention to contemporary trends.

But none of that was better than the actual playing, which reached its zenith during the long, guitar-heavy jam that finished off "Angel Boy" and a noisy nadir on metallic encore renders of "Indian Outlaw" and "Truck Yeah."

While his taped image appeared on TV with his CBS special "Tim McGraw's Superstar Summer Night," the singer also upped the eye-candy ante in the flesh, using an array of video screens to create massive, stage-enveloping 3D visuals to accent the performance. It also allowed him to virtually recreate guest appearances by Taylor Swift and Keith Urban on "Highway Don't Care" and by Pitbull on "Feels Good on My Lips," showing big stars really do have the clout to be in two places at once.

It was indeed a big night all the way around, for McGraw and for DTE, which unveiled its new public bar, The Arbor, as well as other changes, including some new rest rooms, on its opening night. It may have been mid-May, but on this particular night it felt like the heart of the summer at the area's biggest amphitheater.

Denmark takes out Eurovision 2013

Denmark has won this year's Eurovision Song Contest with the song Only Teardrops by Emmelie de Forest.

It is surely a great testament to the success of Australia's international broadcaster that Eurovision has acquired such a dedicated local following.

Were it not for SBS's dedicated coverage, celebrating the 30-year anniversary of televising the event, it's likely the Australian following would not extend much further locally than handful of diehard European Australians in suburban backyards.

Yet every year parties take place in homes, bars and social clubs all over Australia from St Kilda to Bondi Beach and beyond to celebrate an event to which Australia has never been an active participant ' just an excited and bemused antipodean onlooker.

Aussies love a good contest - and Eurovision provides the perfect opportunity to poke affectionate fun at our European relatives across the pond. But somewhere along the way, Australia fell in love with Eurovision, and now there seems to be no turning back on it.

With Australia's deep immigrant connections to Europe, it's not altogether surprising that we like to feel part of Eurovision. It's there in our national DNA as much as good coffee ' another European import. Of course we fell in love with Abba before Eurovision was screened here ' Waterloo trailed a path for Aussies to follow. And who could forget that our very own Olivia Newton-John represented England at the finals in 1974.

The connections run deep. Not only does the SBS coverage take us on a campy, kitschy trip to the heart of Eurovision, it takes it a step further and guides of through parts of Europe many Australians may have never otherwise have experienced ' and always offers a distinctly Aussie slant on them.

It's like a Euro travel brochure hosted by all manner of singing misfits, punctuated by rare moments of brilliance in which we have to disguise our embarrassed tears at momentarily getting swept away by it all. The camp romantic in us all is awoken from its slumber.

This year as a prelude to the main event we were taken on a campervan tour through the Baltic states with SBS host Julia Zemiro keeping the Eurovision dream alive for all of us back home.

She offered affectionate and often hilarious interviews with an Abba covers band in Sweden, heavy metal Vikings from Finland, and, in a nod to Eurovision's strong gay following, even took us into the bedroom drag performers from Ukraine.

Along the way we learnt about Estonia's singing revolution and visited the house where Abba had formed in the Swedish island of Djurgarden before Zemiro got to meet her childhood idol, Abba vocalist Frida. Pure gold! For diehard fans, SBS also offers Eurovision Radio ' a 24-hour stream of songs from previous contests allowing punters the opportunity of total immersion.

We love to disparage the bad taste tunes like this year's Irish entrant Ryan Dolan who, despite putting on a good performance with beefy dancers who that somewhat stole the show from his rather vapid tune, still managed to get the wooden spoon.

No doubt the arrival of social media has added a whole new dimension to Eurovision, and SBS provided local viewers plenty of opportunities to comment. In response to Estonian entrant Birgit, pregnant and all dressed in flowing white, Australian tweeter @amam1975 jibed: 'The hotel called. They'd like their shower curtain back, Estonia.'

As expected, it was Denmark who brought home victory this year, with the barefoot feral-chic up-and-coming singer Emmelie de Forest winning over voters with her song Only Teardrops. My personal favourite was the Dutch witchy singer Anouk and her tune Birds. The Netherlands never does well at Eurovision ' despite trying so hard.

But isn't that the thing with Eurovision ' no matter where you're watching it in the world ' you never expect your own favourite to win. And that's part of the fun.

Eurovision is the contest the world loves to hate. And Australians are not immune. There is something tantalisingly egalitarian about Eurovision that ignores the usual geopolitical hierarchies of Europe.

This year was no exception with the UK finishing 19th despite recruiting a 61-year old Bonnie Tyler to front the stage. Boy George summed it up when he tweeted in response: "Eurovision is so mental! Most of the songs are incoherent and devoid of a tune.' Ain't that just the truth.
